Asus EEE PC 701
This might be worthy to check out CHAKRA live. {Arch based}
Here is my post regarding what I have running as my default OS
http://chakra-project.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?id=212
I have it running off an SD card using Unetbootin... so I have a hybrid "install" that runs out of RAM. I have 2 GB ram. It is the fastest distro I have used. I have tried:
Xandros - liked it sort of but it was just so... untweakable, or you had to tweak the crap out of it to get it to go beyond being just a "netbook" Kernel limit of 1 GB? Rediculous.
EEEbuntu 8.04 but I had it on an SD card and even though it was sandisk extreme III it was still slow
FaunOS... worked but could not compile the eee.ko module on it so I was stuck at 630 MHz
EEEbuntu 8.10 netbook version, I like this and have it installed on the SSD with thing done to it -->
http://po-ru.com/diary/linux-liposuctio … he-eee-pc/
The install was close to 3.5 GB... and now it is 1,8, without removing packages!
I assume it can be done to Arch as well with some minor modifications where you would edit (/etc/rc.conf?) modules to load.

I have an eeePC 904HA. When I first installed, I wanted to test all my options (not much of a laptop user, so I wanted to try all my options with the limited screen size). I quickly got rid of KDE, and then gnome. I still have XFCE installed, but don't use it much. I feel like DE's arent really optimized for the netbook class, as windows never seem to fit (almost all the menu options in XFCE are cut off and I can't read 1/2 of them). Right now I have openbox and awesome, and I seem to switch between the two.

Arch is MUCH faster than the default Xandros install. I used the wiki article to get it up and running. Im using this netbook to control a headless arch pc that downloads files and serves media. I also great for minor web surfing from the couch. I couldn't be happier with it!

Going to have to do a reinstall on the EeePC 901 I mentioned earlier in the thread, main SSD is acting like a hard drive with a bad control board, time for a 32GB SATA RunCore with 125/55 MB/s read/write. ![]()

Netbook type: Asus Eee 901 (2GB RAM, 32GB Runcore S-ATA + 4GB original system disk mounted as /var)
OS: Arch. It has been through a few others, Eeebuntu for one. Ubuntu variants are simply too slow for these machines, including Crunchbang and Eeebuntu. Arch made this computer at least three times faster than with Eeebuntu!
Kernel: Stock! Works like a charm.

i wasn't happy with any existing "just make it install easy and work!" lightweight solution for netbooks & other computers light on processing power, so i made my own.
then i made a website. http://sites.google.com/site/masonux/
in a nutshell:
ubuntu 'base' install, add lxde, add & make networkmanager work with lxde, add firefox, add pidgin, add graphical package manager, add graphical installer, make .iso, done.
install uses 1gb of hd space and 60mb of ram at boot. lighter than the much-vaunted crunchbang.
nothing impressive around here, of course.
i myself have recently converted to using Arch on my primary computer within the last week... but i will probably continue to use *buntu on secondary/family/other machines.
the Arch definition of 'simple' has its place in my world.... and so does Ubuntu's definition.

I'm surprised no one else is using compiz; it works really well for me.
At first I was surprised that actually someone could run compiz on such underpowered machine. I was even more suprised when I tried it by myself, and except the blurring, everything works perfectly smooth.
Wow.
Thanks for enlightment! ![]()

Everything is configured nearly the same as my Latitude E6500 just on a smaller scale.
I've played with UBR and Moblin, but they're either too bloated or don't have the hardware support that is needed.
