Hi Arch-folks!
The problem:
The performance in KDE 4 is poor. Basically everything reacts slowly, e.g. scrolling in folderview is really choppy.
The specs:
Intel P4 3 Ghz
Nvidia Geforce FX 5700
1.25 Gigs of RAM
The story:
In KDE 3, the system was really fast and super responsive. So I wonder why there is such a difference with KDE 4.
I know about the problems concerning nvidia-cards resp. nvidia-drivers and KDE 4 which should be solved with the new .177 driver. Unfortunately with the upgrade to .177 the FX-cards were dropped.
The question:
Does KDE 4 cause the slowness, or does the driver? And in any case, can I expect any improvements or is my machine just too old?

In my opinion KDE3 is faster than KDE4, but KDE4 apps are faster than KDE3 apps So if you have problems with kde4 you can stay with kde3

The problem is in kde4 and the driver also. Kde4 is built with specs that are not well interpreted by nvidia folks. Kde folks says that a driver problem, nvidia silently try to improve. The results here is that nvidia chipset have to improve on this new technologies 'cause kde is on his way. Time will tell if nvidia will make 'the right thing' or loose kde market..
Your machine is not old..probably you'll have the same problems with a shiny new nvidia bell&whistle videocard..

The newer, the crappier. Poor nvidia... Yet they have improved their latest driver a lot (but not for Geforce FX cards) so it becomes usable. Try nouveau, it should work for your card, maybe it's faster. But you wont have any usable 3D support

But we want 3D support!

Better no 3D than no (usable) 2D!
Edit: glxgears might work, though..

maybe try kdemod4, i find it more usable than kde4 in the regular repos

Are you actually seeing an improvement in graphics in kdemod4 as opposed to kde4 from /extra? That would be nice, but I don't see how it's possible. I don't really know, but I had assumed that the differences in kde4 and kdemod4 mainly had to do with streamlined packaging.
