having lots of trouble with optical drive under arch...

So I decided I wanted to burn a DVD today. This is the first time I've used my optical drive since my last reinstall of Arch (4 or 5 months ago). I had it working in a previous install, so I know what needs to be done normally, but I've gone through all the steps and I'm still having problems. I do belong to the 'optical' group.

I can mount and read discs just fine. But as soon as I try to do any burning, I always end up with a similar error message (with dvd+rw-format, it is ":-( unable to INQUIRY: Input/output error"). After I get the error, my drive will just keep churning, I can't eject, can't find or do anything with the drive with any programs whatsoever until a reboot.

I'm not exactly sure what to do next. I don't know what information is useful for tracking down a problem like this, so I'd appreciate any help anyone can give.

UPDATE: After more fiddling I've found that the problem isn't with burning, but with reformatting. Still need help, though.
