I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but what are these files? They'll be the next Archlinux installer or they'll serve as a base to the next installer?

Excellent, I hope that I can install the x64 version on my desktop with the new ISO's, with the old kernel I got some confusing IRQ collisons with my network card.

Re: New 2008.10 archboot test iso/img files

Well, they were only broken by the RCs; the final one had a workaround. Another workaround was added in 27.1. The final fix should be in .28. However: you shouldn't fear about breaking your cards. ;-)

Re: New 2008.10 archboot test iso/img files

I've download the img file, and raw-write it to my USB driver using 'dd'.

But when I boot with the USB driver, I got only a prompt like this:

grub >

It seems there's something wrong with the img file.

Re: New 2008.10 archboot test iso/img files

I used this command:

dd if=archlinux-2008.10-archboot.img of=/dev/sdb

where sdb is my usb driver.

Should I use this command with sudo, or replace the sdb with sdb1?

Re: New 2008.10 archboot test iso/img files

Oh, yes, of course. The driver already has grub on it's mbr (it's arch-200806).

Then what should I do? It seems I have to format it at first, isn't it? Let me try...

Done!

Thanks.

However, I think it will be more convenient if the image has man pages built in.

Re: New 2008.10 archboot test iso/img files

could you try to clean your mbr on this device?
the img file includes syslinux, don't know why this is not overwritten

Re: New 2008.10 archboot test iso/img files

Man pages are not included, because archboot is running only in RAM and though stripped down to run on machines which have less RAM too.

Re: New 2008.10 archboot test iso/img files

Just ran a testinstall on a sparemachine with the CD. It installs fine.
Only one thing seems to go wrong. The pacman mirror configuration only selects the mirrors main URL and not the complete path. In my case it wrote

Server = ftp://ftp.gigabit.nu

I had to change it to

Server = ftp://ftp.gigabit.nu/$repo/os/i686

All in all a nice clean installer. Thanks for the work you have put into this.

Re: New 2008.10 archboot test iso/img files

I can confirm the same niggle as above for an x86_64 install.
( Thought it must have been my error; obviously not )

Synopsis:

Choose mirror from live CD ( heanet.ie )
Installation of base-system proceeds OK.
Choose to keep heanet.ie as my main mirror.
After re-boot, pacman -Syu cannot connect.

Perhaps this question is a bit stupid, but does this version install the whole core or can you choose the packages to be installed yourself?

Re: New 2008.10 archboot test iso/img files

i just wanted to mention there were a few people on irc today who ended up with incorrect permissions on /var/lib/pacman and /var/cache/pacman. The permission of /var/lib/pacman would cause pacman -Ss as a user to fail with: "error: could not register 'local' database (unexpected system error)". fixing this was a simple chmod 755 /var/lib/pacman

I'm not sure if is this an bug in archboot, or in the packages. Some of them did mention using archboot and at least one did a ftp install with archboot. If I can reproduce this tomorrow I'll file a real bug report.
