[SOLVED] Heavy CPU load for no apparent reason

After my laptop is left on for about 15 minutes or so, with KDE 4.1 and a few programs running (firefox,a few okulars, dolphin, pidgin, emacs, conky), the load on my laptop climbs to over 4. 'top' shows X using 73% cpu, and about 10~15 kio_thumbnail process running, each using 1% cpu or so, and dolphin using about 20% cpu. I'm not using any desktop effects/compositing, which has caused similar issues before. But this has started happening regularly sometime in the past few days after an upgrade. Any ideas as what could be the problem?

This seems to have worked. Shame, I was just beginning to experiment with nepomuk - having comments attatched to pdfs is quite useful.

Hopefully 4.2 will be better, otherwise I'll be forced to try gnome (ewww) or worse, openbox
