Unable to start GNOME after upgrade

After upgrading to GNOME 2.24, I can't start GNOME. I log in, the wallpaper loads, conky loads, but then nothing else happens. The splash screen just sits there, and I have to restart X.
Also, this is probably unrelated, but during the upgrade I kept getting error messages about the symbol gzopen64 being missing in libxml2. I 'fixed' that by replacing /usr/lib/libxml2.so.2.6.32 with the one from libxml2-1 (the last version that worked for me).
