Hi all,
when i open a website just as www.sohu.com, my firefox (3.0.3) hang on, then display the web page very slow , and slow scroll , firefox cpu usage nearly about 100.
I tried some sloution,like modify /etc/enviroment to set MOD_DISABLE_PANGO=1,
or disable 'tell me if a web site ...' in firefox security option.
but still slow.
some people says it's must because flash or some js.
but when i try it in windows or ubuntu, it very fast, not like in archlinux.
so i think some thing wrong in archlinux. I need your helps.
thank you.
p.s.
1. pacman is very fast (the speed of wget about 400k/s)
2. gnome web browser like firefox , slow and high cpu.
3. the list of output of 'locale' about 11 lines.
4. i have already set host name like wiki says.
:o

It could be a problem with your .mozilla profile. If you can stand losing your bookmarks and personal settings, try deleting your ~/.mozilla dir in your home directory. You see, the gnome browser uses the same engine, gecko, so it uses the same profile in .mozilla.

Instead of deleting it just rename it, same effect but with the added bonus that you can delete the newly created .mozilla and restore the old one if starting from scratch doesn't solve your problem.

This site slow down Firefox here too.

Try opera. If that is also slow, then its a problem with something else.
Edit: works like a charm on opera but not ff

It slows down a bit here, but it's not that slow. I'm running the nightly build from AUR (firefox-nightly).

I'm using Firefox 3.0.3 x86_64, and the site (while slow, which makes sense, it's ridiculously congested with ads and crap) along with 9 other tabs still only gets me 2% CPU and 5% RAM usage (4GB RAM, Q6600 CPU).
Wait... perhaps it's the ads!
After checking with AdBlock Plus off, never mind. The CPU usage rose only to 2.6%, and the RAM to 5.4%. The site, and the whole browser, were slower though.
I'd just grab the trusty Greasemonkey and start removing crap from that site.

that site is painful with my 2.4ghz core 2 duo

The site loads quickly in Firefox for me, which is surprising since I live on the other side of the world (assuming the web server is physically in China or Singapore---the two countries where you can expect to see 简体字).

I had the same problem back then but now it was fixed all of a sudden. The thing is it is problem with your network provider. It was for me. ^^ You may check it out, and try to surf using other distro for comparison.

kaola_linux, did you even visit the site?
I can definitely say that that site is unbearable here. Firefox lagged by about 6 to 8 seconds - what I did $NOW would be done $NOW + 6 to 8 seconds into the future. Additionally, FF seemed to ignore all mouse activity, but thankfully I know heaps of keyboard shortcuts
As a web developer (well, I know about web tech, but don't actually make anything) I can definitely say that it's very likely because of all the flash content, especially the javascript-repositioned stuff that insists on staying at the bottom of the page without position:absolute.
I visited another site (I don't want to say the URL) that also had some flash content which, once loaded, would render my browser unusable by using 100% CPU. Since the pages had some video content on them I wished to watch, I would have to go into /tmp, figure out which file was the cached video and back it up, all while the offending tab used 100% CPU and rendered all operations 60% to 70% slower. Then I could finally close the tab and watch the backed-up cached video with mplayer. As a small test, I tried disabling the Flash plugin while on that site: all pages worked smoothly with no slowdowns or massive CPU usage.
So I'd likely say that if you disabled flash or wrote perhaps a greasemonkey script to annihilate all but the flash content you really needed to navigate around the site, it would probably work just fine.

Windows was made for looking at success from a distance through a wall of oversimplicity. Linux removes the wall, so you can just walk up to success and make it your own.

Yes. you are right.
but i strange it Why is only slow in my archlinux, not windows or ubuntu.
not only firefox but also other browse...

I think it's same web site. so it's very fair to ubuntu, archlinux, and other distro.
so it must be my config file is error or miss something. that's not perfect.
i just want to like dsr.

dsr, are you disable flash and other thing too?

I think the problem might lie within that site (sohu.com). My otherwise snappy Firefox install almost locked up and the CPU shot to 100% from %3. I have FlashBlock and AdBlock Plus, so I'm not sure what the issue was...do all other sites load quickly?

english web site fast than other language site. (a little)
the output list of 'locale' seems too long.
Offline
wget can run in 400k/s , so i think that's not network problem.
so it must be some archlinux config file error.

Tried the website in firefox 3.0.3 and realy slow here to comparied it to links -g, and links was way faster vill try the webage on my xp computer later and se if it is some speed diference. Comparing to xp firefox.
Feels like there is some config file fore flash that are the problem.
