Hello,
This is probably not the right board but I don't know where this should go.
OpenOffice 3 crashes always when trying to access the top window menu. This happens especially in Writer. It is pretty obvious that it is going to crash because when I move the mouse over the menu titles they don't highlight like the buttons of the toolbar and like all menus generally. It just freezes and I have to kill the process.
The strange thing is that it is fine as long as you work with the toolbar and the rest of the environment but the menu always crashes the program.
Anyone else with the same problem? Is this an Arch problem or OpenOffice in general?

this is usally desktop and theme specific. please read the wiki page and then tell us more about your environment.

Delete or rename ~/.openoffice.org and try again.

That did it! Thanks! I renamed the folder and openoffice recreated it. Probably a version incompatiblity...

Thats what I though.
There should be a message about this on the console when you upgraded OpenOffice, try to keep an eye on the console for messages when installing packages, it will spare you to all kinds of problems
Oh and one thing I have learned, the first thing to try when a program doesn't work as it should (and did work well before) is to delete/rename the folder with the configuration, worked every time for me so far

I'm experiencing this same thing. I have noticed that it happens when I open a .doc file, which is MS Office format. The program crashes when navigating the tool bar menus at the top. If I open the program with no file it does not crash.
I suspect something with the theme as someone mentioned above. When I open with .doc, the window looks as though there is no theme applied. When I start with no file it uses my GTK theme settings.

Have you added "export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome" somewhere. See the wiki.

That's no more needed. The package now sets that variable in /etc/profile.d/ - so just one relogin is needed or source the profile file.

I tried "export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome" manually and logging in and out. Same result. There is a positive note, launching OpenOffice first then opening a .doc doesn't crash the program. :-/
