[SOLVED] REALLY high CPU usage for X lately: I'm a dumb

Openbox, nothing really else going on special. I noticed moving windows around was oddly choppy looking, and then I watched my conky output and my CPU use is shooting up to around 50% or so. Just when moving the windows around, though. Nothing else causes any issues.

EDIT: pretty much everything's causing a big spike, actually. Minimizing/maximizing, opening and closing stuff. Anything I do makes my CPU usage pop.

EDIT 2: Doing a little more (basic) digging I found that moving windows causes X's CPU usage to go from roughly 1-2% to over 50%, and things really start dragging when that happens. Any suggestions?

Turn off compositing, your computer is using software rendering.

Figure out how to get hardware rendering, and don't turn it back on until you have! tongue

Okay, solved it.

You said it was compositing (which I knew I didn't enable when I set the system up) and that confused the hell outta me because I'm not using Compiz or anything, so there's nothing on my system that could be doing that.

...except the conkyrc I nipped from someone else. roll

I scanned the headers and it looked all good, but looks like something in it was trying to force compositing. Tore all that out and rewrote the whole thing, everything came around.

Thank ya for pointing me in that direction!
