Hi,
I am new to Archlinux, have tried out many distros starting way back from redhat 7 to newer pclinix os , ubuntu, opensuse, debian but never settled with any one. In between i even tried out leopard, thanks to osx86 team but learnt that if you want to use leopard properly you need to get a Mac. I got Vista with new notebook i got last year too, its works well but takes too much of system resource which i don't like. I have largely stuck to windows due to two reasons
1) Development work
2) Certain Apps like Photoshop, Office and few more made for win even though they do work using wine but not satisfied with its performance.
But now for nearly 2 years or so am using VM for doing development and am willing to make another VW to run apps that directly don't work well under linux so decided to give Arch linux a try. Currently trying it out in VM and once happy with it will move it to proper installation.
Questions:
1) It asks for horizontal and vertical refresh rates, old days i had crt and manual had those settings mentioned but in laptop (hp dv6500t) how do i get those. Currently planning to go ahead with default ones mentioned in the guide. Hope that wont be an issue as anyways doing VM installation.
2) How well will vmware work in linux haven't tried it yet, am in process of installing DE.
3) Does arch specifically favor any DE, as say in guide they mention of XFCE or KDE before that and there is KDEmod project. For most part i have never liked KDE and preferred to use Gnome. Not a fan of eye candy, but would prefer system to look neat as main use will be sort of netbook and learning linux and rest all in win WM installations as i prefer to keep my daily use system clean . Any alternate suggestions welcome. I am not starting and a vs b war just a suggestion considering my requirements.
Thanks,
Jay

1) I just used the defaults whenever I configured Xorg.
2) Yes it works very well, I have used workstation on Ubuntu before.
3) No, you choose what you want. KDEmod was just a project that was made for Arch, that's why some people think its the main DE.
Yep, I would just boot Windows on a VM and use Photoshop from there.

Thanks for your reply
Everything went pretty well
Just have one issue, I manged to get vmware working on it but when i shared a vm file and tried opening in it, it said you can not open a vm in a vm
My situation was Host (vista) running (Arch in VM) which was trying to run (Xp in VM) is it possible i can test running one
Rest all is set may be after a couple of weeks will switch to full time Arch
Thanks for the amazing wiki
