awesome 3 - X cpu hog?

After running awesome3 for a couple hours,  X starts eating up 60-70 % of the cpu and things start getting real laggy, like a 1/2 second to change tag views.

Anybody else have this problem...

Here's my rc.lua,  which was hacked from someone elses rc.lua smile

Re: awesome 3 - X cpu hog?

Same happens here. Around 40% CPU after 1-2 hours.

Re: awesome 3 - X cpu hog?

I've only just started using awesome, but I haven't had any problems like that with it.  The only things changed in my rc.lua are the terminal and theme.  My home machine hasn't had any problems, and my work machine, which hasn't been shutdown in a week or so, has ~2% cpu utilization - it's running firefox, komodo edit, gimp, dolphin, and several terminals with screen and irssi.

Re: awesome 3 - X cpu hog?

It might be an Nvidia problem,  though I'm running 173.14.12...
But I don't seem to have the problem with openbox

Re: awesome 3 - X cpu hog?

I just killed xcompmgr and found out that the CPU usage went from 30% to 0.
Could be the solution.

Anyone has an idea what's wrong?

edit: I'm trying xcompmgr-git currently and so far it looks good.

Re: awesome 3 - X cpu hog?

I had that problem with xcompmgr too! I don't use it anymore, pseudo transparency is good enough for me smile

Re: awesome 3 - X cpu hog?

Real transparency in a tiling window manager ? Why ? Do windows overlap there ? If so, then you're using your window manager in a wrong way smile

Real transparency in a tiling window manager ? Why ? Do windows overlap there ? If so, then you're using your window manager in a wrong way smile

Cause if I use xcompmgr I am able to see my sexy arch wallpaper underneath the terminals, which of course brings the bonus that I am getting more girls IRL. They like things like that, I can tell. Yes, yes.

You can see your wallpaper under your terminals with pseudo-transparency just fine.
You'd only need real transparency if you overlap them, and if that were the case, then you're not using a tiling wm the way it's meant to be used smile

The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, is the day they make a vacuum cleaner.

Here's how you set pseudo-transparency for urxvt:

Create a file ~/.Xdefaults

urxvt.transparent: True
urxvt.tintColor: #000000
urxvt.shading: 40

Arguably real transparency would be nice in a tiling wm for things like conky on the desktop(but there are better alternatives than that).

Other than that it's pretty much worthless.

Re: awesome 3 - X cpu hog?

Seems to work with fake transparency. Thanks timetrap.
