Hey, I'm fairly new to Arch (came from Ubuntu) but I am proficient at Linux in general. I have a Dell XPS M140 laptop, and sometimes I use it on battery. The battery percentage (according to ACPI) drops 1% every minute. I have installed laptop-mode, but it doesn't seem to be affecting anything. I have also installed powertop, but that didn't make a difference.

Powertop only tells you what stuff is using energy. It doesn't automagically fixes anything. At the most it gives you tips and offers you to enable stuff but you still have to decide to do so yourself.
First start would be clocking your CPU to the lowest possible speed using the ondemand frequency governor.

And how would I do that?

The wiki will tell you: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CPU … cy_Scaling

Yeah, I was just reading that before you posted.
But it looks like it didn't help, I set it to the lowest possible frequency (800MHz) But it is still going down 1% every minute. :S

One of the things i always check whenever i'll buy a pc or any computer device is the battery..It plays a vital role on the use of your laptop especially if you mostly use it outside home, where you can't plug.

The average is probably 3 hours.

The average was 3 hrs.
But I just installed Ubuntu Intrepid just for the kicks on a seperate partition and I found it also drops 1% every minute. Then a notification came up saying my battery was dieing and could now only hold 35% of it's full capacity.
I guess it's time to call Dell for a new battery.
Thanks anyways, guys.
