Frequent X crashes - help diagnosing cause

Recently the X server on my laptop has started crashing fairly frequently, generally right when I'm in the middle of something sad. The screen goes blank, and then a corrupted display of coloured vertical lines appears. Ctr-Alt-Backspace doesn't work, Alt-SysRq doesn't work, although the computer is still running as I can shut down cleanly by pressing the power button.

Here is the Xorg.log:

Fatal server error:

It generally seems to happen when I'm in Firefox. I suspected nspluginwrapper + flash, but it's done it without any flash objects running in any tabs. KDE 4 is also a suspect.

Linux is supposed to have legendary stability, and here's me having to reboot more often then the XP machine in the study, and then explain to everyone I just cut off on google talk the difference between the kernel and the graphics server. Can anyone help?

Re: Frequent X crashes - help diagnosing cause

Are you running compositing?

Whenever I do, the intel driver is really crashey and unstable here, although I don't get lockups, I get segfaults.

Windows was made for looking at success from a distance through a wall of oversimplicity. Linux removes the wall, so you can just walk up to success and make it your own.

Re: Frequent X crashes - help diagnosing cause

No, I already disabled all kwin's compositing effects. The intel driver is still in pretty heavy development isn't it? Maybe I should check out the Xorg server in testing.

Whoops, yes that would help. IIRC, I didn't modify this at all from the 'Xorg -configure' output.

Re: Frequent X crashes - help diagnosing cause

I actually had this exact same problem in KDE4 after installing a bunch of updates, and yea, it seemed to only occur when using firefox (I have it open 24/7, really, so that's not much proof that it's causing it).   I reinstalled Arch, no problems now, but I'm using openbox at the moment.

Re: Frequent X crashes - help diagnosing cause

I also had this in Gnome.it got partially fixed by :
a. removing flash
b. using  http://archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-dev … 06907.html
c. i think the problem is because of something wrong configured but for the moment i don't have the knowledge to understand it.
you could also try (don't know if you use gdm) http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GDM
Inittab Method

p.s.i also use Arch x86_64

Re: Frequent X crashes - help diagnosing cause

To disable the effects of compositing in ones compositor is not sufficient. You should put Option "AIGLX" "Off" into Section "ServerFlags" of your xorg.conf.

Re: Frequent X crashes - help diagnosing cause

OK, I'll try disabling AIGLX. Will that disable 3D accelerated graphics as well though?

I also might look at moving back to Swfdec or Gnash from Adobe flash, but I wasn't to succesful with those. Maybe wait for one more version increment smile
