Any advice on how to get USB microphone working with OSS?

I'm trying to get the USB microphone on a Logitech Quickcam Pro for Notebooks working with OSS. I understand the microphone support is considered experimental at this point, but it seems like the sound system (MCP51) is common enough that it may be usable. I found this thread that had some ideas, but honestly I don't know what I'm looking for in the mixer settings:

I really don't want to go back to ALSA, but if there's no other option I will. Any ideas?
