Encfs permission problem

I seem to have permissions problems running encfs. I say permission problems because I can mount as root just fine.

Here is the command I run:

encfs /home/richard/data/sensitive /home/richard/encrypted/

and after entering a password I receive this:

fuse: invalid argument `/home/richard/data/sensitive'
fuse failed. Common problems:
- fuse kernel module not installed (modprobe fuse)
- invalid options -- see usage message

The fuse module is loaded.  Sshfs works fine as a normal user.  I can mount using that same command and password with root.  Any suggestions on what the problem could be?
