How to uninstall qt designer in Arch linux

Hi,
   I am a new user of Arch linux. And I am loving it. Recently I installed VLC media player in arch using pacman. And it installed Qt designer, Qt assistant and Qt linguist along with VLC.

A check with the command :

# pacman --query --owns /usr/bin/designer
/usr/bin/designer is owned by qt 4.4.3-1

... shows that Qt designer is owned by Qt 4.4 package. And VLC is based on Qt 4.4.

I want to uninstall Qt designer, assistant and linguist as I do not have use of it. Is there any way to uninstall these programs alone without breaking any of the Qt based programs such as VLC installed on my machine ?

Thanks

Re: How to uninstall qt designer in Arch linux

Short answer: no.

Longer answer: you could just delete them (be careful...), but they will get reinstalled with qt updates.

Even longer answer: perhaps KDEMod splits them although you will need to go to the KDEMod site an look at there packages to find out

Re: How to uninstall qt designer in Arch linux

With KDEMod installed:

$ LC_ALL=C pacman -Qo `which designer`
/usr/bin/designer is owned by qtmod 4.4.3-2

So they are also included in qtmod (KDEMod replacement for qt), maybe you could file a feature request to get these splitted too.

Re: How to uninstall qt designer in Arch linux

I find it strange that Arch linux which prides itself in its configurability would tie up Kde software development tools (which the end user seldom uses) such as designer, linguist and so on with Qt without any option for the user to uninstall them if he wants to.

I have used Ubuntu and some other distributions. None of them have this problem. If I install VLC, they install only VLC and nothing else.

Having said that, I think Arch linux is a better distribution for its speed and lean nature.

But then the other distributions also split of header files from libraries...  Our policy is not to split up packages without a really good reason.

Re: How to uninstall qt designer in Arch linux

Thanks for the input Allan :-) I am not as knowledgable about these things to form an opinion. But as an end user, it is atleast an irritation to see software being installed without it being asked for. I am particularly miffed by it when I see the software in the menu - I use Lxde.

But I guess I can live with it. Any way, arch is taking way less space on my machine than any of the other Mainstream  Linux distributions and I am happy with it.

Re: How to uninstall qt designer in Arch linux

VLC is still installing qt4, along with linguist, designer, assistant, etc. How do I uninstall them?

prakhar@sim74stic ~ $ sudo pacman -Rns qt4
Swipe your finger across the fingerprint reader
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: grantlee-qt4: requires qt4
:: lib32-qt4: requires qt4
:: polkit-qt4: requires qt4
:: qscintilla: requires qt4
:: vlc: requires qt4

A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.

This is a six year old thread.  Do not necrobump old threads - and if you do, at least read them first and you'd have found the answer.
