Due to GNOME MPlayer being the most aesthetically pleasing MPlayer frontend, I installed it and gave it a try.
Upon opening a video, the audio plays fine, but the video output is tiny (see image). I can't resize the window, I can't make it fullscreen, and I cant change the size of the window using the options within the player itself.
Any help whatsoever would really be appreciated, as using a proper frontend is far nicer than using the command line version with Thunars custom actions.
Edit: I'm using OpenBox and XCompMgr.

Try update to latest version (0.9.1). Just copy gnome-mplayer from the abs tree and then modify these lines in the PKGBUILD:
pkgver=0.9.1
source=(http://gnome-mplayer.googlecode.com/files/$pkgname-$pkgver.tar.gz)
md5sums=('05ec62fb24a42e5e8fc35b68949636c8')

I updated to the latest version (see image), but the same problem persists.

Same problem here, only sometimes. In othe cases the video output simply stops after a few seconds. Everything works fine with mplayer from cli.

I've noticed some problems now playing mp4 files. Only sound works but video is messed up, running from mplayer cli everything works fine. I will file a bug to the devs of gnome-mplayer when I get around.

Both gnome-mplayer and gecko-mediaplugin are out of date. Maybe building to 0.9.2 would help?

My version is the current svn (0.9.2), so thats not the problem. Also changing the settings in the gui doesn't make any difference so it points to beinh a bug.

Anyone find a fix for this issue?

Sorry, forgot about this thread.
First of all, it's always a good idea to build the latest svn, since the problem might be fixed. Second, one could try to change the video output in the preferences to see if that helps.
Lastly, browse all the bugs at http://code.google.com/p/gnome-mplayer/issues/list and if you can't find anything then file a bug report.
I found the developer kdekorte to be very helpful.

I posted bug 114. I have tried to change the video output, to upgrade to latest svn, to remove my preferences, but to no avail.

Perhaps someone else can contribute its problems with gnome-mplayer (the developer is saying that it is something mistaken in my xorg setup):

It's something of a wild guess, but have you tried to change the gtk theme?

Before heimdal upgraded last time, I didn't have the problem from the opening post with mplayer-svn. When heimdal upgraded and before I rebuilt mplayer-svn, this happened to all videos. After I rebuilt heimdal, it happens on occasion, and is usually corrected by restarting the video. I'm not sure if that's the culprit, but it may be.

My problem is actually different (this is the reason why you have already removed the comment to the bug which I have raed through email, I guess ). I have tried to downgrade to heimdal 1.2 (I had it in cache) and to recompile heimdal in abs: no luck.
