need help with awesome textbox

So I stuck a section of battery-monitoring code in my .config/awesome/rc.lua, as shown here, but I can't seem to get awesome's textbox to display it. I tried this:

-- Hook called every second
function hook_timer ()
    -- For unix time_t lovers
    -- mytextbox.text = " " .. os.time() .. " time_t "
    -- Otherwise use:
    mytextbox.text = " " .. os.date() .. battery() .. " "
end

But that results in the textbox reverting to its default content (i.e. "awesome" and the version number)... What exactly do I put in mytextbox.text to get the battery percentage displayed properly?

Re: need help with awesome textbox

I'm not using Wicked, I'm just using a textbox to display the battery status... All I need to know is how to add the battery() function to my textbox so it is displayed.

Re: need help with awesome textbox

Okay, it looks like battery() isn't going to work. All I want to do is display battery percentage and charging/discharging status in a textbox, as opposed to using Wicked or Amazing or whatever. Can someone please tell me how to do that?

Re: need help with awesome textbox

I use this function:

function batteryInfo(batteryId)
    local cap = io.open("/proc/acpi/battery/"..batteryId.."/info"):read("*a"):match("last full cap:%s+(%d+)")
    local cur = io.open("/proc/acpi/battery/"..batteryId.."/sta"):read("*a"):match("remaining cap:%s+(%d+)")
    local sta = io.open("/proc/acpi/battery/"..batteryId.."/sta"):read("*a")
    if sta:match("charged") then
        dir = "="
    elseif sta:match("discharging") then
        dir = "v"
    else
        dir = "^"
    end
    local tempBat = ((cur * 100) / cap)
    local battery = math.floor(tempBat * 10 ^ 2) / 10 ^ 2
    if tonumber(battery) > 25 and tonumber(battery) < 75 then
        battery = setFg("#e6d51d", battery)
    elseif tonumber(battery) < 25 then
        battery = setFg("#ff6565", battery)
    else
        battery = battery
    end
    return battery
end

Then call it with this:

batteryInfo("BAT1")

Re: need help with awesome textbox

How? I have this:

-- Hook called every second
function hook_timer ()
    -- For unix time_t lovers
    -- mytextbox.text = " " .. os.time() .. " time_t "
    -- Otherwise use:
    mytextbox.text = " " .. os.date() .. batteryInfo("BAT1") .. " "
end

for my textbox, but it is still not displaying anything. What do I put in the textbox? " " .. os.date() .. " " " " .. batteryInfo("BAT1") .. " " ? Where do I put my periods and quotes?

Re: need help with awesome textbox

Try

mytextbox.text = " "..os.date("%T").." "..batteryInfo("BAT1").." "

If that does not work, I would make sure that my textbox is in fact called "mytextbox".

Re: need help with awesome textbox

Bump. (Sigh.)

Edit: Ah, I'm getting "attempt to index a nil value" on line 443:

    local cur = io.open("/proc/acpi/battery/"..batteryId.."/sta"):read("*a"):match("remaining cap:%s+(%d+)")

Could that be my problem?

Thanks... How do I display that *in addition to* the date in the textbox?

(Dang, Lua is a lot less intuitive than I'd hoped...)

Re: need help with awesome textbox

Okay, I put the script in ~/Scripts as battery.sh... And in rc.lua:

function get_command_output (command)
    local c = io.popen(command)
    local output = {}
    i = 0
   return c:read("*line")
end

-- Hook called every second
function hook_timer ()
    -- For unix time_t lovers
    -- mytextbox.text = " " .. os.time() .. " time_t "
    -- Otherwise use:
    -- mytextbox.text = " " .. os.date() .. " "
    mytextbox.text = " "..os.date("%T").." "..get_command_output("/home/proteus/scri$
end

All it displays is "awesome v3.0"; in VT1 it gives me an error about attempting to concatenate a nil value. Anyone?

Re: need help with awesome textbox

Grr... Still need help. Every second I am getting this error

W: awesome: luaA_dofunction:238: error running function: /usr/share/awesome/lib/awful.lua:375: bad argument #3 to '?' (number expected, got nil)

And it is slowing awesome down, such that there is a visible delay e.g. at the command prompt and when switching windows. How do I modify my battery script to fix this?
