I have a conky window on my desktop devoted purely to the output of a certain script. When I first boot the output is terse, outputting only a few words. Unfortunately, conky seems to decide what width it wants to use permanently based on the width of its initial contents.
So basically, I set maximum_width to 400, but since the first few seconds of output is only 150 pixels wide, that's as wide as conky ever goes.
Is there a trick to force conky's width to be what I specified as it's maximum? I tried using a $hr, but that didn't work. It appears that if I restart conky at some point it will happily dynamically change sizes according to the content, but I have to restart it to get that behavior, which mystifies me.

Can you post the full .conkyrc? That might help.
My guess is you might want to use minimum_size.
And in the midst of such perfection,
I can't help but feel diseased.

Ah, minimum_size does seem to do the trick. Problem solved until otherwise noted.
