[SOLVED] Compiling Mplayer

Ok, so after a small bit of research, it seems the package that you would get by using pacman -Sy mplayer is an old version and it is best to compile from SVN.  so I was trying to follow the wiki

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Com … r_From_SVN

to do just that, however, i have run into a problem right at the beginning.  i have an nvidia graphics card, and the proprietary drivers for it installed, and whenever I try to install libgl i get the following

libgl conflicts with nvidia-utils. Remove nvidia-utils?

but nvidia-utils is a dependency of the nvidia package, so i must have it to make use of my graphics card.

I guess I just need to know what would be the best method for me to install mplayer on my new arch box (new to arch and LOVING it so far)?  Also, it seems SMPlayer is the most popular frontend, is it what i should go for as well?  Any help is appreciated.

thanks

Re: [SOLVED] Compiling Mplayer

Use one of the packages from AUR. Choose the no GUI if you want SMplayer.

Re: [SOLVED] Compiling Mplayer

the no-gui seems odd, isn't SMplayer a GUI for mplayer?

thanks

The no-GUI option simply doesn't build the standard gmplayer interface. You can install SMplayer or even better, gnome-mplayer with gecko-mediaplayer.

im guessing that would be the newest version then?

Also, you recommend the gnome-mplayer and gecko-mediaplayer (im guessing firefox plugin?), woudl these still work fine on my system, even if i run kde?

Sorry for all the questions, i just want to get it right the first time.  Thanks for all your help, and still in need of a little more.

peace

Re: [SOLVED] Compiling Mplayer

That package is from subversion, which is to say that it will pull down the current development tree. It'll be as new as it gets.

Both gnome-mplayer and gecko-mediaplayer will work on your system. And yes, gecko-mediaplayer is a plug-in for Firefox. I recommend that over any other plug-in because it works incredibly well. Far better than anything that I've ever seen under Linux.

Re: [SOLVED] Compiling Mplayer

alright, well, i have now installed mplayer-nogui-svn without a problem, compiled fine, and installed and everything.  I also got gnome-mplayer-svn installed, however, on this one, i had to edit the PKGBUILD file and change the arch=('i686') line to arch=('x86_64'), then it continued to compile and install fine.  I have also installed the mplayer-w32codecs package from AUR as well.  Now, when getting to gecko-mediaplayer-svn, it has the same problem that gnome-mplayer-svn had, where it says that it doesn't support x86_64, however, there are no comments on this package that said it works fine in x86_64, and I don't want to install something that has the chance of crashing my browser, so, do you or anyone know if this package is stable under x86_64?

Re: [SOLVED] Compiling Mplayer

Both gecko-mediaplayer and gnome-mplayer from subversion should be fine. You can also simply download slightly out of date versions of both; They're in community. Another option in to pull their respective folders from the ABS tree and change the pkgver and md5sums lines.

Re: [SOLVED] Compiling Mplayer

I went ahead and edited the PKGBUILD file and added the correch arch line, and it compiled and installed fine, it is also showing up in firefox's add-ons list, havn't had a chance to test it yet though, still only gone to sites with flash video.
