Xyne's Arch Linux Stuff

Greetings Archers!

I present to you the new home of powerpill among other things: http://xyne.archlinux.ca
I hope some of you find this useful.

If you have trouble accessing the site:
Some DNS servers don't recognize this site yet. If your ISP's DNS server happens to be one of them, you can use this link to access it directly or you can try one of the free public DNS servers from this page (I've had good luck with 4.2.2.6). To use one of these servers, open up /etc/resolv.conf, comment out the existing "nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" line, and add a new line with one of the IPs for the listed DNS servers on that page, e.g.

nameserver 4.2.2.6

On my system this is automatically reset at boot by dhcpcd so keep that in mind. Hopefully most ISPs will start resolving the address properly once there's some traffic.

Seems to work fine here, too, on a Bellsouth DSL line (and Arch64).

Re: Xyne's Arch Linux Stuff

Thats looks really nice... It would be great if you can provide a page with links to all the nifty archlinux utilities that people post in community contrib. Even forum links would suffice.

Re: Xyne's Arch Linux Stuff

Thanks u_no_hu.

I've actually thought about something like that for the Arch area too. I need to give it some thought to come up with a practical way to do it though.

Re: Xyne's Arch Linux Stuff

The powerpill stuff should be added to Yoaurt. But great job on the contributions. Better then what I would manage.

Re: Xyne's Arch Linux Stuff

Thanks guys.

Yaourt can use powerpill already, so there's no need for yaourt to consume it. wink

I've added a section to the powerpill info page about using powerpill with yaourt. Please tell me if that makes it clear.

I started with the standard blue but then I thought that it would probably be a bad idea to use the same layout because it might mislead people into thinking that it was somehow part of the official site. I settled on that red when playing with the logo in gimp.

Nice work Xyne. While I don't use any of these things, it's more because I'm a lazy computer user 8)

This is awesome. Also, I like the site a lot.

Re: Xyne's Arch Linux Stuff

@phrakture
Thanks. Give powerpill a try if anything though and let me know what you think as part of it was inspired by some metalink stuff that (I think) you'd posted ages ago.

@MetalheadGautham
I updated the post with a direct link to the site. Use that for now until your DNS server starts resolving the site (or try another free public DNS server).

Re: Xyne's Arch Linux Stuff

Trying powerpill in x86-64 on my machine which has an 88KB/s download speed normally.

I have been running it as root after install of -gen-conf.

I also have yaourt installed.

The results obtained in using ....powerpill -Syu ...this date are discouraging.

The speed indicated during aria2 activities was half speed.  Whether that is normal for multiple downloads is not apparent to this user, but may indeed be the case.

I don't think the results indicate any speedier upgrade than normal pacman...in fact seem slower and call for user input(s).

See the following for operational results:

bash-3.2# powerpill -Syu

Perhaps I expect too much from powerpill but find the multiple access steps and timeouts to be a negative aspect of its use.

Pacman has the same difficulties in locating mirrors with the packages available and goes through the same timeouts.  Thus each method drags...............

Perhaps I need an upgrade?

Re: Xyne's Arch Linux Stuff

Simo the great helped me track down the DNS issue. (All hail Simo" Oh Mighty Simo!) I've had my host change the records and I think the DNS should be much more stable now. Anyone who thinks Xyne's stuff is as awsome as I do: Please let me know if you still have trouble accessing the site, it should be fixed now.

Re: Xyne's Arch Linux Stuff

(I'm assuming it's still ok to post on this thread even though it's really old, since Xyne's site directs people here...)

Xyne, do you have any plans to generate a xyne-any.files.tar.gz filelist? This would make it work with pkgfile, and make pkgfile -u stop complaining. (Alternately, do any of your tools replicate pkgfile's functionality in some other way?)

Re: Xyne's Arch Linux Stuff

It should be ok to post here.

Adding the "files" archive to my repos (via makerepo) is on my todo list, along with either adding a search function to bauerbill or creating my own tool to search through files. All of the necessary code is there in perl-xyne-arch. I just need to connect the dots.

Re: Xyne's Arch Linux Stuff

I just wanted to say THANK YOU!!!! I use many of your great tools.  I would even consider to use bauerpill of the name wasn't so strange ;-)
[Bauerpill klingt einfach nicht so, wie ein Computerprogramm klingen sollte - egal es gibt ja powerpill...].

GREAT WORK!!

GREAT WORK!!

Thanks.
