font path errors when starting x?

Howdy!

I managed to get Arch installed on my machine(after some nasty NIC issues...)  and got x to run splendidly if  I log in as root.  When attempting to startx as a user, I'm assaulted
with a number of "could not init font path element"
errors.  Been chasing the prob for hours and hope i can
find some advice  here.

Thanking you all in advance.....

Re: font path errors when starting x?

First questions out of the way:

You're trying to startx with the same window manager as root and as user? good to make sure the problem is related to X and not the wm. Have you tried different window managers?

are you using x.org or xfree86?

post your xorg.conf/xfree86.conf, or at least parts of it related to font paths.

Re: font path errors when starting x?

OK, let's see......

I'll post the config  text with font paths at the end....
I'm really green with linux so please bear with me...  i do no know, nor do I
know where to find the window manager being used.  I've browsed the config
files that I've been intimate with so far and no luck.  I do know that I'm using XFree86 and had to do a bit of twiddling to get root to startx.  If you could tell where to find which window manager I'm using for each account, I promise to be more prepared next time.

I refuse to log back into windows, I'll learn this if it kills me.......

BTW thanx for the quick response!

config lines.....

startx looks in .xinitrc in your home directory. as root, compare /root/.xinitrc to /home/username/.xinitrc. First thing is to get those two files looking the same so you know you're testing the same thing as root user and as normal user.

The font paths *look* ok.
