Best Transparent Terminal

I want a terminal that will take advantage of real transparency by xcompmgr, other than gnome-terminal.  Xterm doesn't ahve transparency...and I don't know which other terminal emulator is best for transparency.  I don't want the crappy (imo) "transparency," where it just puts the desktop as background in the terminal.

I've tried using gnome-terminal, but I get weird redraw problems.  The shadow seems to leave a trail whenever i move the window.

urxvt?

Windows was made for looking at success from a distance through a wall of oversimplicity. Linux removes the wall, so you can just walk up to success and make it your own.

Re: Best Transparent Terminal

Tilda, it has an option in the preferences to make it transparent.

It has 'true' transparency, though, unlike the other terminals that just show the background even if you have an app beneath it.

Re: Best Transparent Terminal

Put this in your .Xdefaults for urxvt:

urxvt*depth: 32
urxvt*background: rgba:0000/0000/0000/0000

That's 100% transparent. The last four characters can go from 0000 to ffff.

Re: Best Transparent Terminal

I like urxvt personally. As far as I know you can do both real and fake transparency with it.

Re: Best Transparent Terminal

Alternatively, you could pair any terminal with transset(-df).  That's what I did with gnome-terminal before it implemented true transparency.

Re: Best Transparent Terminal

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I've tried tilda and urxvt.  I got transparency in both, and tilda is working nicely.  Urxvt is having the same redraw problem as gnome-terminal was...I'm thinking it's a problem with xcompmgr with shadows and transparency.

About to try terminal and terminator.

edit:  Is anyone else here having problems with xcompmgr using shadows and transparency with terminals?  What options for xcompmgr are you all using?

Re: Best Transparent Terminal

I don't think xcompmgr can handle both shadows and transparency. I had the same problem you are having, but I must have found a way to make it not draw shadows around urxvt, because I still had shadows around my other windows until the other day when I decided I didn't like them anymore.

If shadows are enabled, urxvt leaves trails all over desktop when I move it (and terminal is darker than usual). However, if I resize it first, it becomes clearer and everything works like it should. Weird, looks like some kind of bug.

Real transparency + no shadows, works ok too.

EDIT: that goes for terminal, too.

EDIT2: gnome-terminal too.

whoa I tried that with terminator, and the shadow just disappears and the transparency works without trails....I wish I knew a way to make it so shadows wouldn't be on on certain programs by default.

btw ty whoever suggested terminator...I really like it.

This can't be true, because I was using transparent terminals with xcompmgr for quite a while and just recently after an update I started to have problems (though very slight, here).  I don't know exactly what did it, but since it isn't particularly bothersome I haven't worried about it.

Re: Best Transparent Terminal

Suddenly tilda will only start as root from a terminal! Does anyone have a solution to this?
If I try starting the program as user, nothing happens!

Thanks.

Re: Best Transparent Terminal

Thanks ArchArael, but sakura does not (as far as I can see) support true transparancy? It just takes the desktop image as background.

Sorry...I was wrong indeed. Tried right now to install xcompmgr and transset. Sakura terminal does not support the true transparency indeed. I can make it transparent with transset but I cannot make it transparent from its own menu. When I try to it turns on the pseudo transparency. I thought it was able because of vte base (the same of Xfce Terminal), but obviously I was wrong. Using transset is a little bit ugly because the entire window is made transparent, even the borders and the title bar. I installed Xfce Terminal and it supports the true transparency very well. Maybe Xfce Terminal is the good choice for people who want true transparent terminal emulator. smile

Re: Best Transparent Terminal

The VTE based terminals are usually the best.  All should have solid support for transparency.  For a quick rundown and comparison:  http://www.calno.com/evilvte/  Generally the further down on that list you go, the more likely ncurses apps start breaking.  Maybe they've fixed it, but elinks on sakura used to be frightning.

I've been a big fan of (xfce) Terminal for a very long time, but I've found that rox-term is smaller, draws faster, and matches (or exceeds) Terminal in all features.
