performance slowdown (harddisk problem?)

After a recently kernel update, my harddisk spins down quite a lot. The load_cycle_count increases by 1~2 per minute, for example when i use mouse to open or close a webpage, the harddisk will spin up again(with a short freeze sometimes).

hdparm -B 255(or 254) /dev/sda doesn't fix the problem.

Any hint where I should look into? Thanks.

Here is my dmesg output:

Re: performance slowdown (harddisk problem?)

Strangely enough I noticed this yesterday on my laptop. I thought it might have been laptop-mode playing up.

Well, obviously, did you try disabling laptop mode and see if the load cycle counts return to a normal rate?

Re: performance slowdown (harddisk problem?)

I actually just did exactly that; I am not noticing any spin downs for the last couple of minutes.

As I had disabled HD management by laptope mode I wondered what was causing the spin down. Apparently, the setting CONTROL_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT (the only HDD related setting that was enabled) was causing the spin downs.

#
# Should laptop mode tools control the hard drive idle timeout settings?
#
CONTROL_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT=1

#
# Idle timeout values. (hdparm -S)
# Default is 2 hours on AC (NOLM_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT_SECONDS=7200) and 20 seconds
# for battery and for AC with laptop mode on.
#
LM_AC_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT_SECONDS=7200
LM_BATT_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT_SECONDS=20
NOLM_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT_SECONDS=7200

LM_AC_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT_SECONDS is set to 20 by default, which doesn't make sense to me, as the laptop still is on AC. Therefore I have set it to the same value as without laptop mode.

It seems like this has solved the issue.
