No video in VLC or Totem

All I get when I try to play a compressed video (.mkv) or a DVD is a green screen, however w/ the .mkv files I do get audio, just no video. Anybody have an idea? Thanks!

I'm not an expert. but I guess it might be a problem with the video driver. I've no idea how to change this in totem, but in vlc there is a video driver selection in the preferences, try a different one.

from memory, for totem you need to install gnome-media and run gstreamer-properties.
