After upgrading my system today, Okular won't open PDF files anymore.

Downgrading poppler and poppler-qt to 0.8.6 resolves the issue.

I'm having the exact same problem, except downgrading to poppler and poppler-qt 0.8.6 doesn't help anything. I can use any other pdf viewer (like epdfview), but okular does not work. I'm running kdemod with a fully updated 4.1.3 system.
