Problem with Sound and Drive mounting

I have setup Gnome successfully on my arch install thanks to Arch Beginner's Wiki. Now i have two problems

1. Sound is not working (installed alsa-utils). Red Cross mark next to speaker icon.
2. Mounted windows partitions with fstab

/dev/sda5 /media/sda5 vfat defaults 0 0
/dev/sda1 /media/sda1 ntfs defaults 0 0

The drives are mounted read only when i access them through nautilus. Also my pen drive is not auto mounted when inserted

please help

Re: Problem with Sound and Drive mounting

1. Post your soundcard.
2. http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NTFS_Write_Support if you haven't read it already.

Re: Problem with Sound and Drive mounting

1. try "alsamixer" in a terminal. Do you see any bars? Try also "speaker-test".
2. Sounds like the permissions are wrong (755 I guess). Change it to your needs.

Re: Problem with Sound and Drive mounting

Try solving one problem at a time -- Let's get on with the soundcard.

Did you follow the ALSA wiki page? You should have standard snd_intel8x0 kernel driver already installed and loaded.

Re: Problem with Sound and Drive mounting

Just posted in this http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=58781 and previously in this http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56949

This snd_pcsp is becoming a real problem for newbies, I think!

Edit: Well not only newbies.  It happened to me. lol

Re: Problem with Sound and Drive mounting

Well, IncredibleLaser just reported you about a mine of information about NTFS mounting, have you applied all sections of the guide, in particular the "Advanced configuration - Editing fstab" part? This should fix the permissions for users. If you modify your state from the first post, please update us, or we will not be able to help you.

For mounting your devices, also please add your username to plugdev group.
