Hey, I've gotten Arch installed on my new Inspiron 13, which has a widescreen display. The only issue I've encountered is that I can't seem to find out how to get a 1280 x 800 resolution in GRUB. I know for 1024x768, the VGA is 773. Can anyone help me figure out what to put for 1280x800? Thanks!

standard vesa framebuffer can't do this. you will need either uvesafb or a certain hardware related fb driver like radeonfb depending on your graphic card.

I've found somewhere on the net that it should be vga=952, but I'm not sure if it'll work.

Check /boot/grub/menu.lst to see what available modes you have (the comments should still there if you didn't manually remove them from the file)
I think the vga=952 is a ubuntu thing that works only with usplash...the Ubuntu "splash screen".
[edit] Hm apparently Suse 10.2 had that too...

Where did you get hwinfo package atasmrk? The one in AUR is flagged outdated...

With vga=864 I have a 1280x800 framebuffer (intel drivers)

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...

That should be 1440x900, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VESA_BIOS_ … de_numbers
Edit: Sorry I missed the subnote, it seems it selects 1280x800 8-bit on some laptops.

You need to install an RTFM interface.

thanks moljac, 864 works on 1280x800 here with nvidia
edit: 0x361(865) is also the highest one displayed by grub in the selection which it suggests is 1280x800x32 and this works now.
