Left arrow repeat doesn't work with inittab auto login

I'm trying to configure Openbox to login without a login manager. I tried the method listed here with 'exec openbox-session' in ~/.xinitrc:

It will log into Openbox, but the left arrow key loses its ability to repeat (place laughter here). The arrow key works fine if I use Entrance or Slim. WTF and how do I fix this?
