Kernel update and nvidia drivers

The last couple of times I updated the kernel, X failed to start on reboot. It said nvidia kernel module was not found (I can't post the exact error log because unfortunately I didn't save it).
Both times I've been able to solve this simply by reinstalling the nvidia-173xx package. However, I'd like to find a permanent solution.
I might be wrong, but I think this started to happen after having to switch to the legacy drivers (173xx, since I use a geforce fx 5200)

Re: Kernel update and nvidia drivers

every time the kernel undergoes a serious revision change you will need to re-install any proprietary drivers again as the directory for the modules location changes.

That being said, nvidia is a proprietary driver.

Ok, but unless every one of the last kernel updates has seen a major revision change (which I doubt, correct me if I'm wrong) there must be something else causing the problem. Even today's update forced me to reinstall the nvidia driver.

Anything else I may look for?
