[solved] catalyst and xorg from testing: success anyone?

Hi,

I finally want to upgrade my kernel to latest version. Since change from 2.6.26 to 2.6.27, X won't start anymore, and it is related to fglrx (apparently catalyst 8.8 is not intended for use with kernel >=2.6.27).

In testing repo there is the new catalyst 8.11 - together with new xorg-server. Updating those two and everything else that comes with new kernel (2.6.27) I was hoping I could finally use the new kernel. But it still does not work. Black screen as usual.

I had problems with my Radeon before. I needed to add "mem=2900M" (<- without black screen as well) and "nopat" to kernel parameters. Having to use mem=2900M doesn't make me happy (figure mtrr is the problem, but I can't prove it).

If anyone successfully got this combination running I would appreciate any help, Xorg.conf or whatever helps to get it working.

Thanks.

Re: [solved] catalyst and xorg from testing: success anyone?

I had black screen too when I updated catalyst to 8.10 or newer. I had to delete /etc/ati/amdpcsdb to get it working.

Re: [solved] catalyst and xorg from testing: success anyone?

I had to uncomment 2 lines in my xorg.conf

now it works like a charm.

#RgbPath      "/usr/share/X11/rgb"
and
#Load  "record"

and i added this for better 3d effect, no idea if it helps or not.
Option "UseFastTLS" "2"
under Device

by the way, i have an radeon mobility x1600

I do have 3 GB ram, but where are the 256M of vid-mem in mtrr? This is still bugging me - if anyone has a clue, I'd be thankful.

It all worked until new catalyst. But maybe I was just lucky and the mem=2900M was a very unstable fix that had to break at some point.

Thanks for the help.

Re: [solved] catalyst and xorg from testing: success anyone?

This is the third thread on Catalyst now ... but anyways. The latest 8.8 Catalyst from extra repo should work with 2.6.27 as it has been specifically patched to work with it. For me everything had worked until 8.9 with patches on kernel 2.6.27 and after that I had to do what ak-89 already said: deleting the driver database and regenerating it again with "aticonfig --initial -i /etc/X11/xorg.conf". Should be all fine for xserver 1.4.2 from extra.

I myself am running on xserver 1.5.3 from testing with a self-compiled 8.11 catalyst (been using the pre-8.11 version from testing until 2 days ago). No flaws here.

Your Xorg.0.log indicates it doesn't find any screens. Are you sure you configured X right? Maybe can you post you xorg.conf? It's a bit odd having issues for 4 consecutive driver versions. I go so far as to say maybe it's even hardware related... Nopat never affected the driver working at all, it just takes care of freezes and micro stutters.

Comparing your against my latest log (on HD3200, i.e. no discrete memory using 512MB of my 4 GB system memory as well):

me:  (--) fglrx(0): Linear framebuffer (phys) at 0xd0000000
you: (EE) fglrx(0): No valid linear framebuffer address

and then looking at you lspci output it should indicate your fb at 0xc0000000. Your graphics card is indicated as HD3400, but I can't find that as officially supported even in the 8.11 catalyst release notes. Is it the X3400 variant? Or one like this: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-938673.html I've found another thread about 3470 integrated variant with your error. So maybe it's just not yet supported? Does vesa driver work or one of the two open source ones?

Option "UseFastTLS" "2"

This won't work. The driver overwrites these settings unless they have been written to the driver database. So after changing the fglrx-[Device] section in xorg.conf you will always have to run "aticonfig -i /etc/X11/xorg.conf" to apply these changes. However it doesn't work for TLS. There you'll have to add "--tls=2" to the previous command, xorg.conf is always ignored.

The one that just got put into testing works perfectly for me.
The full-screen scrambling bug is gone now.

Re: [solved] catalyst and xorg from testing: success anyone?

I'm using xorg-server (1.4.99.906-2) and xf86-video-ati (6.9.0-1) from testing from some time ago on a radeon 9600. I know they're a little outdated, but still newer than current. I upgraded to these as current was having 2 nasty bugs for me, and they were solved in here. I did not upgrade any further as everything works just fine for me now.
But for my part the xorg-server and xf86-video-ati from testing are quite valueable.

Re: [solved] catalyst and xorg from testing: success anyone?

Well, like Inkaine said, it might be it is not supported,

However, I AM running catalyst 8.8 with kernel 2.6.26 right now. So, I would assume that even though it might not be officially supported, it still works - even for future versions of catalyst. That something like that happens is just ridiculous, absolutely stupid - well done ATI.

I guess I'll try some of the open-source drivers now. Thought i also had trouble with radeonhd when I initially tried setting up my machine 3 months ago. Again: no useable screens found.

ATI just isn't there yet, unless its 2+ years old graphics adapter, stay away!

Thanks for the help, I'll mark the thread as SOLVED.
