xrandr, i810, external VGA, and xorg-server 1.4.2 problem

I have a laptop using the i810 driver at 1280x800 resolution. xrandr can change resolution between that and 1024x768 with no problems. The trouble comes when I plug something into the VGA port of the laptop. I can change resolution, FN+F4 to switch to the VGA port, and it works properly. I then FN+F4 to get back to the laptop screen, try to change the resolution back, and the screen turns to complete gibberish. I have to then change to a console session and restart X to get things back in working order. Any ideas on how to fix this?

The intel drivers from the regular repos doesn't work with this chip very well; There are strange flickers and artifacts. The intel driver from testing seems to do better, except none of the function keys worked with the new X server and supporting libraries.  I don't have access to this machine much, so I needed to keep it working. Hopefully I'll get my hands on it again this weekend and try to solve this properly.
