Kernal Panic - Not syncing: Attempting to kill init after pacman -Syu

So I just tried to upgrade, when I choose arch in GRUB it start loading then hangs at Kernal panic - not syncing: attempting to kill init.

How can I fix this?

And more importantly how can I avoid this in the future?

Thanks for any help!

This is all I could really find

Loading initramfs

/init:36:replace:not found
Export:36:bad variable name
Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempting to kill init

Re: Kernal Panic - Not syncing: Attempting to kill init after pacman -Syu

First post us your /var/log/pacman.log to see what actually you upgraded.
Second grub.conf
Third have you tried arch fallback?

You could use the Arch live installation CD (or USB stick) as resque system and mount your disk manually.

How would I do that? Also I can't seem to find a download for the live cd.
What commands would be used to mount it?

Sorry for the long wait for a reply tongue

Re: Kernal Panic - Not syncing: Attempting to kill init after pacman -Syu

I don't think an hour without a response warrants bumping. In response to your question, the install CD is a live CD on its own. I'm not sure how you'd go about mounting your installation, but it would be something along the lines of

mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/arch (or some other name) -t auto

[2008-11-15 00:48] blender is using the NAN makefiles to build, so we can access some better

[2008-11-15 00:48] - i18n support
[2008-11-15 00:48] - anti-aliased interface fonts
[2008-11-15 00:48] - gameplayer
[2008-11-15 00:48] We also ship the plugins, but most of these features can be accessed only
[2008-11-15 00:48] from the users home directory. Therefore, you wanna copy everything from
[2008-11-15 00:48] /usr/share/blender to ~/.blender (some are hidden files!). The browser-
[2008-11-15 00:48] plugin builds but is using an old mozilla API, this is why it doesn't work

[2008-11-16 10:20] http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Perl_Policy).
[2008-11-16 10:20]
[2008-11-16 10:20] - The perl package and its modules install in the core_perl directories
[2008-11-16 10:20] - Perl modules provided by Arch Linux install in vendor_perl directories
[2008-11-16 10:20] - CPAN/CPANPLUS installs should be placed in site_perl directories
[2008-11-16 10:20] - Older modules in the 'current' directory should still work
[2008-11-16 10:20] - Programs with embedded perl interpreters need to be rebuilt
[2008-11-16 10:20]
[2008-11-16 10:20] Users of the CPAN or CPANPLUS shells should modify the configuration
[2008-11-16 10:20] to use the site_perl directories. Under the CPAN shell use:
[2008-11-16 10:20] o conf makepl_arg INSTALLDIRS=site
[2008-11-16 10:20] o conf mbuildpl_arg installdirs=site
[2008-11-16 10:20] Under the CPANPLUS shell:
[2008-11-16 10:20] s conf buildflags installdirs=site
[2008-11-16 10:20] s conf makemakerflags INSTALLDIRS=site
[2008-11-16 10:20] Then save the configuration.

Re: Kernal Panic - Not syncing: Attempting to kill init after pacman -Syu

grub's menu.lst file is located in /boot/grub/menu.lst
The pacman.log doesn't reveal anything in particular, except that it had been a while since you upgraded your kernel...
As for the chroot what command did you use exactly?

Yeah I just installed arch recently and thought pacman -Sy updated roll

here is what I did completely

mount -t auto /dev/sdb6 /mnt/ (root)
mount -t auto /dev/sdb5 /mnt/ (/boot)
mkdir /mnt/proc
mount -t proc none /mnt/proc
mkdir /mnt/sysfs
mount -t sysfs none /mnt/sys
mkdir /mnt/dev
mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
chroot /mnt
chroot: cannot run command '/bin/bash': no such file or directory

If i don't do mkdirs it just errors and says /mnt/XX does not exist.

Here is my menu.lst

It says root is (hd1,4)

According to the chart

# /dev/hdb2 (hd1,1)

so for /dev/hdb6 (my root)
Should it be:

root (hd1,5)

Is that the problem?

EDIT: changed to (hd1,5) it did not work :\

Re: Kernal Panic - Not syncing: Attempting to kill init after pacman -Syu

Unless disk UUID changed after the update (which is highly unlikely) the menu.lst should not be a problem.
Here's what people with your problem say:

Re: Kernal Panic - Not syncing: Attempting to kill init after pacman -Syu

Yeah I just installed arch recently and thought pacman -Sy updated

No, -Su = update, -Sy = sync database with arch server database. The combination of the two -Syu sync's pacman database to arch server and updates any new packages.

Since you can't update anything with out getting new packages you must sync the database first. So pacman -Syu is what you want.

man pacman

Re: Kernal Panic - Not syncing: Attempting to kill init after pacman -Syu

To force sync:

# sudo pacman -Syy

Birger smile

uhm.. you're mounting /boot where you mounted / first? That's why all directories like /bin etc are not visible anymore.
It should be "mount -t auto /dev/sdb5 /mnt/boot"

Re: Kernal Panic - Not syncing: Attempting to kill init after pacman -Syu

I am now able to chroot in to /mnt/ but the problem is when I try to roll back the kernel I think its the version that broke me install.

So I am trying to use the one from addons/core-pkgs/kernel blah blah

How do I access this when I am on the live disc? Ive tried addons/ and /addons/ and about every variation of it
Any ideas?

Re: Kernal Panic - Not syncing: Attempting to kill init after pacman -Syu

Try to reinstall the 2.6.27 kernel first it should be in /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
If it doesn't fix the problem then the 2.6.25 kernel is located somewhere on the cd.
In order to access the one from the live cd you'll have to mount it first. Make a new directory and mount the live cd in it and then cd to the kernel dir.

What is the command to mount the cd?

Just to be sure, also manually update initial ramdisk environment in the chroot with mkinitcpio -p kernel26

?

Re: Kernal Panic - Not syncing: Attempting to kill init after pacman -Syu

1) Mount your hard drives
2) DON'T CHROOT
3) cd /arch/(LOCATION OF THE KERNEL)
4) cp kernel26* /mnt/MOUNTED HARD DRIVE/home
5) chroot to your install
6) cd to the location where you copied the kernel
7) pacman -U kernel26*
8) reboot and hope...
