No sound in flash. Sound working otherwise.

Hey all, suilenroc here. With the recent advent of some high-quality Creative Drivers for my X-Fi card, I've been able to enjoy some great audio from my Exaile media player. However, sound from flash in firefox is still not forthcoming. Does anyone know how to fix this? And does anyone know how to install flash-10? For some reason, I just can't figure out how to uninstall flash 9 and install the latest version.

Thanks! -suilenroc

bump-bump-bumpitty-ump. Sorry, but I can't find how to fix this, and it's kinda critical.

Re: No sound in flash. Sound working otherwise.

You're not using the pacman package of flash? It updated to flash 10 no problem.

Oh, and are you using Arch32 or Arch64?

Also, don't want to sound mean, but 1hr21minutes is not enough time to justify a bump. People will see, and bumping more than once every few days is generally frowned upon.

Oh, sorry 'bout that. I'm used to faster forums, evidently.

I would have used pacman, but I didn't know the exact command for it. Could you tell me?

Also, I'm not entirely certain which distro I'm on. I burned this disc months ago, during my complete linux newbie days, and only got to it now. I actually forget which it is.

I think there is some things you need to straight out before posting here. If you are not sure which distro you are using, I guess there is a lot more  for you to learn.

Maybe try this: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … _alsamixer (If you are using Arch, that is.)

Re: No sound in flash. Sound working otherwise.

Okay, let's switch this up. Suilenroc's brother here. For the sake of convenience, just call me Suilenroc.

So I've been using Linux for about a year now, I used to use Gentoo and moved to Arch. My bro got a creative X-Fi card a while back when we was on windows, and now switched full time to Linux because of the new sound drivers. What I just can't figure out though, if how to get the sound working on his firefox installation. I don't know whether it's a firefox issue or a flash issue, specifically.

I've install the x-fi drivers, and am using ALSA for them, obviously. My brother doesn't know which VERSION of Arch he's using, x86 or x86_64, but it is, most definitely, arch.

Now, I don't, myself, remember the pacman command for installing flash 10 either, and I can't seem to find it via google. From what my brother told me, he installed nspluginwrapper and nspluginwrapper-flash, and linked it to his firefox by following a tutorial. This got flash VIDEO to work, but the audio is not being output through the x-fi card or the x-fi drivers.

Sorry for the earlier posts, I'll be taking over on this issue from here. (I've told the little guy to not get me involved unless he absolutely cannot figure the problem out himself. Well, now's one of those times. Thanks for bearing with him earlier, you can deal with me now. I know a bit more than he does when it comes to Linux.)

Re: No sound in flash. Sound working otherwise.

Elder suilenroc here for a quick update. I've managed to figure out that this in Arch X86_64. I've installed flashplayer10 with nspluginwrapper, and made sure to completely remove all traces of flash9. I still, however, lack any sort of sound. I've noticed, though, that I'm lacking sound in other parts of firefox, as well, leading me to believe that all sounds from firefox either are muted or are going through the wrong sound device.

Re: No sound in flash. Sound working otherwise.

Maybe you should try the alpha version of native 64bit flash plugin: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=59147
EDIT: Another idea: maybe you need to set up dmix.  Without dmix enabled only one application can use the soundcard at a time, so if you have a music player running, for example, firefox would produce no sound...

Hm, never thought of that. I'll google it and see what I get. Thanks, I'll report back soon.

Re: No sound in flash. Sound working otherwise.

Thanks, I was just there.

I know that on Ubuntu I simply disabled pulseaudio and installed esound, and everything worked. However, I can't seem to get esound to work on this. I run ./configure on the unzipped source package, but it tells that there's a problem with "ltconfig," and that the "libtool configuration failed." I know that this thing is quite old, but it worked like a charm on my ubuntu 8.10 system.

Re: No sound in flash. Sound working otherwise.

I had the same problem and installed pulseaudio too.  It didn't work at first, but then I removed libflashsupport and replaced it with libflashsupport-pulse and it worked well.

Here's a link to libflashsupport-pulse in the AUR:
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?d … s=0&SeB=nd

Never buying a Creative product again.

Re: No sound in flash. Sound working otherwise.

I couldn't get any sound in firefox either -- I'm on 64bit arch -- but I did some searching and found a package called libflashsupport. I just installed it, restarted firefox and everything worked perfectly. So, unless you want to, there is no need to go messing with pulse

Re: No sound in flash. Sound working otherwise.

I just had this problem, but the fix was much easier than the solutions here.  I checked the kmix settings and noticed that the PCM was all the way down.  This caused youtube and other flash videos to be silent, but there was sound in Amarok, Dragon player, and system sounds.  Turning it up solved the problem.  I have no idea why it was all the way down.  I just installed fresh from the Chakra DVD today.

Since this thread is one of the top results for googling "Arch no sound in flash", I thought this might be useful to someone in the future.

Thanks for the tip. Didn't think that it was that simple!

libflashsupport

Most users will not want libflashsupport, because it's aimed at OSS rather than ALSA.

ALSA is the default in Linux, and ALSA's emulation of OSS breaks dmix. As I seem to have to keep reminding people eternally sad

Re: No sound in flash. Sound working otherwise.

so if we dont want libflashsupport because it is aimed at OSS rather than ALSA, then what do we want? libflashsupport-pulse?

I just installed Arch 64bit after using 32bit on an older computer for a while, and i have the problem with sound not working in firefox, i have only tried playing videos on youtube (I installed flahplugin to get that working) but there is no sound.

So libflashsupport-pulse from the AUR should correct this problem?

also, why did I not have this problem with 32bit, but i do with 64bit (curious)

Re: No sound in flash. Sound working otherwise.

Here's my ~/.asoundrc - play with it.

Flash is notoriously bad. So if you only want flash for youtube, I'd suggest gnash.

Re: No sound in flash. Sound working otherwise.

yeah, i have had a few problems with flash over the years. I checked out pulseaudio in the Arch wiki following it helped alot

Flashplugin (x86_64 only)

If you are using flashplugin from the multilib repository you need to install lib32-alsa-plugins and lib32-libcanberra-pulse if you want to use software mixing, otherwise you will not be able to use other audio application while using flashplugin.

# pacman -S lib32-alsa-plugins lib32-libcanberra-pulse

@marno11 when I was playing flash video, sound from the other programs is blocked. I tried your solution and it worked! Thank you.

Re: No sound in flash. Sound working otherwise.

I was searching for this issue on Google and found this thread. My solution was to rename / move my ~/.asoundrc file and restart Firefox. Just in case anyone else is searching.
