Toram Boot of Standard 64 bit Arch Install

I have plenty of RAM and would like to load the whole system to RAM on boot for that unique superfast toram/copy2ram/c2r super fast speed and responsiveness (live puppy, slax, SL live, pclinuxOS, etc).

If I could load the system within about 3 or 4Gb of RAM, then I would still have plenty of RAM left for general operation of the system.

What would be required to do a complete toram boot on a standard arch 64 bit install?

sure his system see all of his ram, he's running 64 bit arch which can address the memory. My guess is that he has 6-7 gigs of memory

Re: Toram Boot of Standard 64 bit Arch Install

You may find Faunos useful in determining the performance of a to-ram install.

Faunos provides c2r as an option when booting.  It has 1GB of install size and installs to tmpfs.

It is easily downloaded(at somewhat slow speed) and written to USB  flash device with dd program.

Using the c2r option places all of the system in ram as you desire.  Thus, with no further ado you can examine the resulting operational use of ram.

Be aware that use of normal install of Faunos is executed from tmpfs in ram without c2r.  C2r permits the USB flash device to be removed after boot-up.  Performance of the system while in C2r can be compared with normal boot at your leisure.

This method should satisfy your requirements easily.

Re: Toram Boot of Standard 64 bit Arch Install

I have tried faunos previously and it worked well however it is now somewhat dated without the latest software. There doesn't seem to be much happening with Archie either.

It just seems developers are trying to minimise RAM usage with the operating system and applications when I think they should be doing the opposite. Using all the RAM available, then reallocating / reprioritising as required (if you are about to use your max ram level).

It is a waste having so much RAM sitting around doing nothing all the time.

You could try using preload to cache parts of programs to the ram until you find a more complete solution.  It is in the community repo and AUR.
