pacman -Syu pwned my system shutdown
On my laptop, I updated to the latest package set. I can no longer shutdown. The machine hangs on remounting the root filesystem ro.
Anybody else experience this?

No, I removed the stock kernel and run a custom one. it worked just fine for quite some time until this most recent update.
