Pacman & kernel update problems

Hello all,

Im mostly a linux noobie. I mostly distro hopped until last week and I decided to try Arch. I really like Arch and would prefer to have it as my distro of choice.  I installed and the latest release and everything went well. I installed KDEmod and Gnome for my desktop environment. Up until now pacman has performed well,  today when I did my pacman -Syu, a new kernel was installed. After that I rebooted and have lost everything.:| I got errors during the boot process (commands not found during init). My rc.conf file lost all the settings, no daemons, it boots me straight to command line. I can log in as root. but it cant find any files need to configure linux. I know that I will have to install the Nvidia drivers. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Re: Pacman & kernel update problems

Hello,

Im not really sure what log to post to show bootup been surfing the net and found the bootlogd daemon but not working. Is there something similar on Arch that will allow me to log the boot process. This is frustrating, everything was well until i did and upgrade. A message flashed by which said fatal error forcedeth not found and im getting errors on all the modules not there in the init process. I switch over from sidux to try Arch thing it would be more stable. Thanks for any help.

Re: Pacman & kernel update problems

Have you tried booting with the fallback kernel image?

dmesg is the cmd to use once you get to a prompt I believe.

My rc.conf file lost all the settings, no daemons, it boots me straight to command line.

What cmd line is it taking you too? Sounds to me like you might have updated your kernel without updating video drivers? If you get to a prompt then something must be booting.

I am just confused, kernel update should not delete system files and if kernel update breaks something then normally you get a kernel panic, not a command line on boot.
