Cups problem. can access localhost:631, but clicking stuff does nothin

rather frustrating.
I'm able to go to localhost:631, which means it's correctly installed and in my daemons, but nothing I click once there works.
I can't click 'add printer' (it just hangs)
very strange
I'm a member of the 'lp' group
here's my var/log/cups/access.log

localhost - - [18/Nov/2008:21:05:27 -0700] "GET /admin?OP=add-printer HTTP/1.1" 200 0 - -

I tried reinstalling (and deleting /etc/cups but nothing has worked
any ideas?
