I quite like the idea but it's one of those things I can live without.

I don't like this at all. "command not found" is all you ever need to know. If you are using arch then you know what a path is and you know how to find out of programs are installed.
archlinux - please read this and this — twice — then ask questions.

I don't really like it. It seems like more output in my terminal that I don't need. Besides that, I can always just google to find out what programs are in what packages.

What do you Think?
I'd personally be opposed to implementing this as well.
Nothing wrong with asking for opinions, though.

I turned it off when I used ubuntu. Make a typo and there is a nice delay as it searches the database. Probably makes a lot more sense when the usebase rarely uses the CLI.

If you use zsh as your shell, pkgfile from pkgtools provides a feature to automatically list packages with the binary. See the install message for how to enable it.
EDIT: FTR, ubuntu patches bash to do this.
EDIT2: Alright, I got it working with bash as well. It may be found at http://github.com/Daenyth/pkgtools/tree … -hook.bash
It will be included in the next release.
Caveats with my method are that it overrides PROMPT_COMMAND, so if you use that you need to merge mine with yours or get rid of yours. It also relies on using "history" as well, so you have to have shell history enabled and have a sane HISTIGNORE.

I have to say no, thanks. This feels just like a cartoon of a paper clip popping up, trying to guess what I'm trying to do.
What's even worse, the ubuntu implementation depends on a debian-only extension to bash (command_not_found_handle). This is opposed to the arch way of delivering vanilla packages.
echo '#!/bin/rm' > vanity && chmod +x vanity && ./vanity

belerofontr - please feel free to go ahead with this yourself, if you think it will be useful to you. When you have it working on your own machine, you also have the option of submitting a package for it to the AUR, in case others might be interested.
Personally, I wouldn't have any use for it, and it is definitely not something that would be considered for inclusion in the core Arch system.

belerofontr - If you want to implement this, note that you could achieve something similar without patching bash:
PROMPT_COMMAND='if [ "$?" == "127" ]; then history -w; echo "NOT FOUND: `tail -n1 $HISTFILE`"; fi'a bit of a hack, but still better than depending on an unofficial patch.
echo '#!/bin/rm' > vanity && chmod +x vanity && ./vanity

I should have made a reply instead of editing my post, I didn't see all the new replies. Funny too, hbekel came up with almost the same method.
Anyway: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 53#p454153

I probably wouldn't use it, but can't say that others wouldn't find it useful. This is one of those things that best fits as an addon package for those that want the feature, not installed by default.

I remember Ubuntu having this. It's interesting but not something I could live without.
As someone else posted, you get severely punished for making a typo and hitting <tab> ![]()

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...

The one thing I did like though, is the idea page on openSUSE. Should have something similar for Arch.

I already got three things for that purpose:
1) epi [TAB] #(Tab-completion)
2) which epiphany ifconfig
3) pacman -Qo /sbin/ifconfig

This is one of the most annoying things on ubuntu. "foobar is not found, perhaps you need to install the foobar-tools package with apt-get?"

Seems idiot proof. Too bad arch isn't for idiots.
Ok, but I kid with the pseudo-trolling (or maybe I don't, I can't tell anymore).
Really if you want to see something like this in arch, you should provide it yourself.

This just reminds me of these things in windows that tries to make it more userfriendly but is just useless.
