so what should I install?
and what is KDE-mod?
I'm not a fan of huge desktops, I used to like KDE when I first tried linux, before I realized that less is often more. I'm currently using XFCE on my laptop, and I couldn't be happier with it, I've just a bit curious to try the latest 4.* version of KDE. I found some QT apps I'd really like to try out so I figured now is the perfect time to see what the hype is over the new KDE. So how can I install it without downloading a ton of files that will take all day? I'd really like my KDE to be as slim (and I know that's a relative term as KDE is freakin huge) as possible.

If you want vanilla KDE, then install the kde group.
KDEmod is a modular and tweaked package set of the K Desktop Environment that has been optimized for Arch Linux. It contains additional patches for eyecandy and functionality and a slightly enhanced Qt3 installation...

dedhart,
Be warned KDE4.x is an UNFINISHED product. It has been a source of much disappointment among those used to the quality of KDE3.x
I was a die-hard KDE user for +/- 9 years and after KDE4.x I switched to Openbox3.

I tried KDE4 again this week in both Vanill and KDEMOD and was very dissapointed. Still seems pretty buggy , that is if you like bling on your desk like i do, So im back on Gnome and love it, i always seem to come back to gnome for some reason.

DEs are a funny thing. I never so myself going away from KDE ... but I did.
I tried GNome but it did not feel right (and yet there is nothing overtly wrong with it ) then XFDE and again good eye candy but no eureka feeling.
Then E17. Here I must say: it is beautiful !! ... but something was missing again. Finally I tried Openbox3 and I do not think I'll go back to KDE even if they can fix all the problems they have with it. Ob3 feels just right ... may be I'll spend the next 9 years with it

As far as I know, KDE4mod does not include any patch or modification, it is just a vanilla KDE split into smaller packages so you can better choose what to install and what not. 4.2 will be much better and usable, comparing to 4.1, so maybe you can wait until then to give it a shot.
Since August, I had been stayed in KDE4 for almost 3 months, then tried Gnome and XFCE but they all lack for something. Now I went back to Openbox3 and is even happier with it than ever before. I just miss one thing: pixmap theming. Tried pekwm but it is not as elegant and snappy as Openbox. Where can I find the perfect choice!
Edit: typo.
