compiz and opengl

Today I decided to try out compiz fusion. I followed the compiz fusion wiki and start it under autostarted applications in xfce. (editing /etc/xdg/xfce4-session/xfce4-session.rc  did not work)

However, I noticed that opengl applications all just don't seem to work properly anymore.

In Touhou, a windows game run with wine, window decorations aren't even drawn. If I try to move it (with alt+click) it flickers a little bit, and a copy of it is left where it originaly was. I can take another window, or Touhou itself to wipe this off. Copies also remain while the game is closed, so I'd have to wipe it off with another window. Though the game itself runs fine.

With glxgears there is a window decoration at least, but I still have the same problem where copies of it are left when I move it. However only the copies remain when it is closed, the moved one that is surrounded by window decorations will dissapear fine.

Mplayer cannot play any video at first. All I get is a black screen. However I can play video by setting the vo to be x11, but I'm not sure if this is weaker or detrimental to my videos. (They seem to be able to play fine though.)

Is there anything that can be done about this or is this a normal consequence of compiz?

Re: compiz and opengl

I wouldn't say it's a "normal consequence of compiz" but definitely not unheard of. I've always had piles of similar problems when running anything fullscreen, especially wine in compiz. I've always seen as it something less practical, more for the typical desktop user who doesn't game.

I know, not much of a helpful response, but my experience has been that these kind of things are usually not something we can fix realistically.

Yeah, I'm not so surprised.

I'll just go back to xfwm for the time being. Maybe in a couple of years I'll try compiz again.

Re: compiz and opengl

Are you by any chance using the intel driver?

I have the same problems with any application that uses opengl rendering.

Nah I get WSOD (white screen of death) under compiz on NVIDIA when I try and run some games, its only since 0.7.8 that it started happening, 0.7.6 was fine.

Re: compiz and opengl

Have either of you tried the latest GIT version. It'd be worth a try to see if the bug has been fixed.

Re: compiz and opengl

Using compiz (.78, not git) with current wine, mplayer, glxgears, full screen opengl apps , nvidia, with no issues.
