[solved] Where is kernel 2.6.26+

I really want to get Arch on my new laptop, my first PC since I bought my first Mac 5 years ago.

I have an HP Pavilion dv5-1159se, and it comes with the Intel 5100 series wireless.  I downloaded an Arch .img, and copied it to my USB flash drive.  It boots fine, but I can't get my wireless working.

My card should be supported under 2.6.26 and newer kernels, but apparently Arch is using 2.6.25.  When would Arch be updated to the newer kernel?  Fedora works fine on this computer, but after experiencing the slowness of Vista, I really want a lightweight and quick distro, and Arch seems to be it if I could get wireless working so I can FTP install and start building my system.

Thanks for any info,

just update your system after install.

Re: [solved] Where is kernel 2.6.26+

Actually, I'm using x86_64, does that make a difference?  I can't even install, don't I need internet to get get packages from ftp?

I guess I could get a network cable and try to install wired, but it will be a pain.  If I install wired through FTP, will I then have the newest 2.6.27.6 kernel?  Or would I have to install, then update to get the newest kernel?

I really do like the idea of Arch, but I am not the most experienced Linux user.  I can install Ubunut or Fedora, and 5 years ago I got Slackware installed, but I've been away for a while and am trying to get back into it.

Re: [solved] Where is kernel 2.6.26+

If you have no wired connection available you can boot from a livecd or other install that works with your wireless and install arch from there. (Like you said, Fedora)

See:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … ting_Linux

To answer your question, yes, as long as you select ftp as the install method you will install the latest packages and not have to update after.

(P.S. don't forget to get the iwlwifi-5000-ucode package. It'll be in the core-devel package list if you do a ftp install. It's the firmware necessary to run the wifi link 5100.)

The 2.6.27 kernel is in our repo now, so if you can get the machine online via ethernet, you can update the kernel, along with your other applications. The 2.6.25 kernel was the current version when the install ISO was released.

Re: [solved] Where is kernel 2.6.26+

Ah, I see.  I was sitting here thinking where or when I could buy a network cable so I could do an FTP install, and have an up to date system that supported my wireless...

Dumb me, I finally realize that I HAD an ethernet cable, my printer is hooked up to my router via ethernet.

So, I went into the basement expecting to stand there holding my laptop (nowhere to sit it down and cable is short).  I am blown away that it took all of 30 MINUTES! to install a completely up to date base system.

I uncommented the Windows entry in grub's menu.lst, and Windows still boots fine.  I used iwconfig and was able to bring up my wireless connection and ping google.com, so wifi is working!  I am also impressed by the speed of responses on this forum at this hour (3 am, GMT-5).  Linuxquestions has nowhere near the speed of responses on the forums, and I would assume that it would have more members.

A little more involved than other distro installs, but so far I'm loving the speed of the mirrors and I am looking foward now to getting a DE set up.  Might start with Xfce for the speed.

Thanks for the help,
