A Number of OpenBox Issues

Hello.

I've been trying to figure this out for about 3 hours now, (horribly new to Openbox), and I can't seem to figure certain things out... If you'd all care to help me learn, I'd be most gracious.

1 ) gsynaptics only works for the session I run it in, but upon a reboot, double-tap is turned back on. is there any way to fix this, or documentation showing one how to save these options?

2 ) there is an xml error in my menu.xml, but, for reasons beyond me, I cannot find it. is there an xml checker program that might help me?

3 ) most of the openbox themes i've found, (from box-look for example), can't be installed because they are in .tar.gz formats, and that won't work. also, how does one get gtk engines working, and how do I get themes to run?

Thank you, for taking the time to read my questions. Through learning, I hope I may one day help someone who has had troubles like myself.

BDKL

edit :

also, I can't find any documentation on how to change bmpanel themes. anyone know anything about that?

Re: A Number of OpenBox Issues

1. never used gsynaptics so I can't really help you there.

2. I don't know of any program like that, but you can use the menu.xml file it comes with then modify it with the obconf program.

3. Unpack the tar.gz files and install the .obt files in them. I use gtk-chtheme to switch gtk themes.

Re: A Number of OpenBox Issues

I'll try that, thanks. I've already unpacked the tar.gz file, and obconf couldn't find any .obt files. Is there a way to do it via terminal?

Re: A Number of OpenBox Issues

Yes, you just put the untarred directory in your ~/.themes folder.

Re: A Number of OpenBox Issues

Use gsynaptics-init for your synaptics issue. See the wiki Synaptics page for details.

Re: A Number of OpenBox Issues

@tomk : I must've missed that. I've been configuring my system for 3 days now (3 re-installs, thus far *facepalm*), so my eyes have been getting rather tired. Almost got it, though!

[edit] : btw, it works, thanks.

@SamC : I just did that now, and nothing appeared on Obconf. :\ the one I'm trying to use is arch.green, and I got it from box-look.org (although, I wget'd it rather than used firefox. This cannot be the reason, can it?)

Re: A Number of OpenBox Issues

@tcoffeep: It actually might be an issue, if you only wget'd the "download" llink on this page. *-look uses some sort of php based system, so it doesn't work with wget. Anyway, if I download the file using firefox, I get 91428-arch.green.tar.gz. Once I untar it, I get a directory, arch.green, with an "openbox-3" directory in it. Put the "arch.green" directory in ~/.themes, and it should work.

Re: A Number of OpenBox Issues

Still a no-go. Downloaded it, untarred it, mv'd it from ~/arch.green/ to ~/.themes, and opened obconf and it doesn't appear. :\

( Note : it had the same files as when I wget'd it, if it counts for anything. )

Re: A Number of OpenBox Issues

Huh. What's the output of "ls ~/.themes"?

Re: A Number of OpenBox Issues

Well, for some reason, when I do it with my normal account :

ls: cannot open directory /home/*name*/.themes: Permission denied.

And, when I sudo ls ~/.themes :

arch.green

Re: A Number of OpenBox Issues

For bmpanel, simply start it like such:

bmpanel themename

I believe I preferred the blacky theme that came with it, but that's irrelevant.

Re: A Number of OpenBox Issues

Thanks! I like the arch theme, though. smile

Been using Arch Linux for less than a week and I already feel like I learned more in the time I've used it than in the 6 months I used ubuntu and the year I used debian. neutral

Re: A Number of OpenBox Issues

@tcoffeep: Sounds like a permissions issue. What happens after doing "sudo chown *name* ~/.themes?

Re: A Number of OpenBox Issues

Still a no-go.

I even tried

"sudo rm -r ~/.themes"
"tar -xvzf ~/Desktop/91428-arch.green.tar.gz"
"mv ~/Desktop/arch.green/ ~/.themes/"

and that didn't work. (well, it did, in a way, as my normal account can use it now, but nothing popped up on obconf.)

[edit] :

Never mind. It was the whole permissions thing.

As seen above from what I did, I installed it wrong the second time, after the permissions were fixed. I only moved openbox3 folder over, and not the arch.green. Much thanks, SamC.

I find loading it into an editor with XML syntax highlighting (vi, Geany, MEdit) often helps to locate bugs. (It's usually a missing ">". roll)
