PulseAudio as a drop-replacement for ESD

I'm trying to use PulseAudio as a drop-replacement for ESD and It's not working for me .

I get this error when I run esd (a symbolic link to esdcompat)

~$ esd
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:0
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:0

the same error is shown whether pulseaudio is running or not .
