hi,
i have a problem with nm-applet. if i have a actice network connection (equal of lan or wifi), launch helper closes and i can't start programs. but if i disconnect from the network, i can start programs again and with a new connection to a network, i am not able to start a program again.
i use:
- gnome-network-manager 0.7.0rc2-1 & networkmanager 0.7.0rc2-1
all other from testing and unstable
here i have a example:
-> booting the computer with nm-applet registered in gnome/sessions
-> start complete
-> killing nm-applet
[root@noname harry]# killall nm-applet
[root@noname harry]# exit
exit
-> starting nm-applet again (not as root)
[harry@localhost ~]$ nm-applet &
[1] 7243
[harry@localhost ~]$
** (nm-applet:7243): WARNING **: Could not retrieve dbus connections: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1.
thanks for help
harry

I had this same issue. Unfortunately, I never found a solution.
Personally, I just switched to Wicd. It seems more reliable and higher-level than NetworkManager. That is, it uses the wireless_tools stuff which is pretty reliable, instead of it's own little library.
Stop looking at my signature. It betrays your nature.

what login manager are you using? You might need to do some of the stuff here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Networkmanager-0.7

I use GDM as login Manager
