Been meaning to ask about this for quite a while -- why does running 'gcc -dumpmachine' on 64-bit Arch result in 'x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu'? On all the other 64-bit distros I've tried, 'x86_64-pc-linux-gnu' is the output. And, could this ever cause issues?
Thanks!

I noticed this, it's set that way in /etc/makepkg.conf.

That's just what gets passed to makepkg, though.
Why, is my question?

Bump, I had forgotten about this post, but it's still bugging me.
Any devs know why unknown was chosen over pc?

Boomp. Any info, even if it's "we have no clue, it was just there" from Arch devs?

You might want to give AndyRTR (dev) a ping about this as he was one of the founders of the x86_64 port.

AFAIK i686 Arch has unknown instead of pc as well. One sec, I'll check.
EDIT: Nope, they get the logical "i686-pc-linux-gnu". I'll check with him, thanks.

I686 gives i686-pc-linux-gnu.
You edited just before I posted..

Arch64 is built after CLFS book and most configure scripts check for the "unknown" thingy ![]()
