sound stopped working

Hi all!

I've been using archlinux for a few weeks - but now I've messed up something... sound. I'm not much of an expert, rather a serious beginner / user with linux
I've been playing around with vlc and then all of the sudden sound went away... I thought I would fix it later, but can't do it, and I've forgotten what I've changed sad

It appears as though sound is working, there are no error reports (at least none that I can see) - nevertheless nothing comes out of the speakers. I'm on 64-bit system, using KDE4 - motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L. KMix shows volume at 100%, volume turned up to max on all channels, I've set volume in amixer also as advised in the wiki.

Sound used to work, but doesn't do any longer. What should I check to get sound working again?
Thanks
