No Sound on a Gateway MX3231

Got a laptop on thanksgiving and took ti home to work. so far I have arh running with just about everything going nicely. all I really miss rightnow is sounf and dvd playback. anyway I can toast the current Alsa and Pulse audio to start my sound from scratch to get it working?
