I am recently facing this problem: whenever I try to login via tty, I get the error as per subject
Bad item passed to pam_*_item()
This happens upon successful credentials, and the login gets reset.
Today I have had a particular issue with it, since X wasn't starting after the Xorg upgrade. So I couldn't log in to fix the problem (I usually log in through GDM)... good thing having the Arch Live CD handy
So does anyone have any rough idea about what is causing this problem?
Thanks for your time

I fixed it
somehow i had echo commands in /etc/environment
i removed them and instead put LANG=en_US
like in http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-bugs … 13046.html
and problem was gone.

Hey thanks pwntigo, I had some entries in /etc/environment (bloody ET and Gnome-globalmenu ), so after removing them, everything is back to normal
Solved!
