No desktop effects in KDE4

Hello, I have recently migrated to KDE 4 on both my laptop (Dell Inspiron 6000) and my desktop (Intel Q2D E8400 with Sapphire HD3870 ati graphics card).  Whenever I enable desktop effects on my desktop the screen goes black.  Here is my xorg.conf:

I am using xf86-video-ati driver on both my laptop and desktop yet I have no problems with effects on my laptop.  Could the "unknown" boardname be the cause??

Bear in mind, though, that today's xorg updates might change a bit here and there.

OK, so I have switched from the xf86-video-ati driver to the xf86-video-radeonhd driver since I am using an hd card. If I enable desktop effects and switch to Xrender instead of OpenGl the effects work (although some like the flip switcher are broken).

Any thoughts??
